Before and after shots of the front garden of an El Cerrito, CA house. You see the garden completely torn up, followed by a shot of the berms that were built using the native rocks found underneath the house when its foundation was redone. The pathway has a layer of landscaping material, then gravel, with a layer of "blue" decomposed granite on top of that; all of which helps to keep out the weeds.
Below is a North Beach, San Francisco, garden which had little character. The after shot shows the Cecile Brunner (Sweetheart) rose arch that we put in, an Ingrid Bergman red rose, and other plantings. The end result of the whole garden was like a glorious bouquet of many-colored flowers—with the white plantings glowing in the dark, and scents of seasonal plantings pervading the air—a joy to relax outside at any time of the day or evening.
We kept the old "three-frog fountain" and planted a simple Ipomoea tricolor (Morning Glory) to clamber up and around it, and Mirabilis jalapa (Four O'Clocks) next to it. The rest of the garden was filled with Syringa (Lilac), 17 varieties of Rosa (Roses), good old Jasminum polyanthum (Pink-Flowering Jasmine), various species of Lavandula (Lavender), Plumbago, Dahlia imperialis (Imperial Dahlia), Buddleia davidii (Butterfly Plant), Lamium, irises, hundreds of Narcissus (Daffodil)—a mass of colorful plantings to delight the eye at every season. Birds, butterflies, bees...all of nature swooped down into this hidden back garden to enjoy the bird-bath & fountain and partake of the nectars!
